This means there are 3 boys for every 2 girls.

What Are Proportions?

A proportion is an equation that shows two ratios are equal. It helps us solve problems where we need to find an unknown value.
For example, if you know that 4 apples cost $2, how much would 8 apples cost?

  1. Set up a proportion: $$\frac{4 \, \text{apples}}{2 \, \text{dollars}} = \frac{8 \, \text{apples}}{x \, \text{dollars}}$$

  2. Cross-multiply to solve: $$4 \times x = 2 \times 8 \\4x = 16 \\x = \frac{16}{4} = 4$$

So, 8 apples would cost $4.

Everyday Examples of Ratios and Proportions

  1. Cooking and Recipes:
    • A recipe might call for 2 cups of flour for every 1 cup of sugar.
    • If you want to make double the recipe, you would use 4 cups of flour and 2 cups of sugar.
  2. Speed and Time:
    • If you travel 60 miles in 1 hour, the ratio of distance to time is 60:1.
    • If you maintain the same speed, you can calculate how far you would travel in 3 hours using a proportion:
      $$\frac{60 \, \text{miles}}{1 \, \text{hour}} = \frac{x \, \text{miles}}{3 \, \text{hours}}$$
      $$x = 60 \times 3 = 180 \, \text{miles}$$
    • Map Scales: Maps use ratios to represent real distances. If a map has a scale of 1 inch = 10 miles, then a distance of 5 inches on the map equals 50 miles in real life.
